The Best Foundations for Rosacea in 2021

I've always known I have sensitive skin, but it’s only been recently (at the age of 37) that my skin redness isn't going away. I was recently diagnosed with 3 different types of rosacea (yep, there are different kinds!). Since then, I’ve been on a skincare journey to help soothe and reduce the redness and irritation that comes with having rosacea. I found a ton of great skincare to help my condition, but finding a foundation was a little trickier. I needed a foundation that is gentle enough and non-irritating, but also full-coverage enough to hide my redness. My normal foundation just wasn't cutting it. Here are the best foundations I found for red, sensitive, rosacea-prone skin.

Best Overall:
IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC Cream with SPF 50+

Developed with the help of plastic surgeons, this multitasking CC cream foundation provides optimal hydration and nourishment. It’s formulated with SPF 50 to protect skin from harmful sun exposure while concealing the look of imperfections for flawless-looking coverage that won’t crease or crack.

Why It Made the List

This amazing CC cream is equal parts foundation, skincare, and sunscreen all in one. Even better? It provides full coverage to camouflage redness without triggering flare ups associated with rosacea. Nourishing niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, antioxidants, and vitamins keep skin comforted and soothed throughout the day. SPF 50 adds an extra layer of sun protection, which is extra important for those who have rosacea.

Best for Dry Rosacea Skin:
CLE Cosmetics CCC Cream

A multi-functional BB cream and CC cream combined to create a nourishing foundation that comforts and protects skin with SPF 45. Microcapsule Technology uses pigments encapsulated in a nourishing skincare cream that blends into skin delivering a flawlessly natural look.

CLE Cosmetics CCC Cream

Why It Made the List

This super-silky cream foundation seamlessly blends into skin providing fantastic coverage without flaking or showing dryness, like some other full coverage formulas. While it’s common to shy away from beauty products that contain essential oils when you have rosacea, this creamy foundation contains bergamot, orange, and ylang ylang oils that feel truly comforting on my skin. No redness, no irritation, no problem! While these essential oils didn’t trigger any flare ups for me, you may want to use sparingly at first to make sure your skin agrees with these ingredients.

Pro Tip: This CCC Cream is not non-comedogenic, so if you struggle with acne—you may want to do a spot treatment to ensure it won’t cause breakouts. And, as always, our happiness guaranteed return policy has you covered.

Best For Calming & Covering Red Skin Tone:
Ere Perez Oat Milk Foundation

A buildable foundation that offers medium to full coverage formulated with natural oat milk, peach, and vitamin E to promote healthy skin. The unique, non-greasy formula imparts a natural looking finish that won’t clog pores.

Ere Perez Oat Milk Foundation

Why It Made the List

This natural foundation is chock-full of skin-loving ingredients—but the real MVP in this nourishing cream formula is the oat milk. Oat milk instantly soothes itching, irritation, and redness. It contains anti-inflammatory properties to calm skin and neutralize redness. The lightweight, dewy formula allows you to build your desired coverage while reaping the benefits of nourishing vitamins and antioxidants.

Best For Combination Rosacea Skin:
RMS Beauty "un"cover-up cream foundation

This cream foundation uses auto-adjusting minerals to cover with pigment rather than weight. The flexible, buildable formula can be dabbed on for a sheer look or blended all over skin for full coverage that won’t dry out or settle in pores.

We love the natural looking finish this cream foundation delivers—it blurs imperfections without ever looking cakey or overdone. The natural formula features nourishing jojoba, cocoa seed butter, and coconut oil to keep skin soft and comforted hour after hour. Along with combination skin types, this foundation is perfect for those with mild cases of rosacea.

Best Age-Embracing Foundation For Mature Skin with Rosacea:

Best Full-Coverage Foundation:
Wander Beauty Wanderlust Powder Foundation

This silky smooth, lightweight powder foundation covers redness, discoloration, melasma, and rosacea. The silky powder formula delivers a natural matte finish with buildable full coverage. Talc-free and enriched with globally inspired skin-loving ingredients.

Why It Made the List

If you’re skeptical about powder foundations, you’re not alone. Powder formulas are notorious for drying out skin. But this powder foundation from the experts at Wander Beauty is a game-changer. The feather-light formula feels so soothing on skin and blends seamlessly into skin to cover redness without causing dryness or irritation. Calming aloe leaf extract, hibiscus, honeysuckle flower, jojoba, and hyaluronic acid ensure that skin stays hydrated and comforted all day.

How Can You Find the Right Foundation For Your Skin?

The best way to find the perfect foundation for your skin is to know your ingredients. Whether you struggle with rosacea, or have skin sensitivities it’s best to steer clear of labels that include ingredients like fragrances, alcohol, salicylic acid, retinol, and gel based formulas.

Which Ingredients Are Best For Rosacea?

Alternatively, there are a handful of ingredients that benefit skin that’s prone to rosacea flare ups and sensitivities. Azelaic acid, niacinamide, sulfur, licorice, aloe vera, centella, chamomile, green tea, oatmeal, and oat milk are all soothing and calming on skin. Look for foundations that contain a couple of these key ingredients and your skin should remain calm, cool, and collected.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is liquid or powder foundation better for rosacea?

It really depends on the type of coverage you like. Liquid foundation provides buildable coverage that can effortlessly camouflage redness, while using a powder foundation on top can add even more coverage for imperfections and discoloration. As a rule of thumb, dry skin types should always use liquid foundation.

Is makeup bad for rosacea?

It doesn’t have to be if you’re using the right products! You can avoid flare ups by looking for makeup formulated with soothing ingredients and SPF to protect skin from damaging sun exposure. When you find rosacea-friendly products, you should be able to manage the look of redness without making it worse.

How do you hide the redness of rosacea?

Start with a soothing skincare routine to ensure skin stays clean, balanced, and hydrated. Next, look for makeup without irritating ingredients like fragrances, alcohol, and salicylic acid. Look for makeup formulas that provide the right amount of coverage needed to neutralize redness. For severe redness, use a spot concealer. Once you have a consistent skincare routine and find the right makeup you can conceal redness and prevent rosacea flare ups at the same time.

Pro Tip: Try adding a few drops of over-the-counter Afrin nasal spray to your moisturizer or foundation to temporarily reduce the look of redness. This is an effective, readily available (and cheap!) alternative to medications your dermatologist might recommend. The ingredients in Afrin, calm blood vessels reducing redness on the surface of skin.
